Comments From Our Members
As an experienced professional hypnotherapist and trainer myself, I can't say enough good things about the Clinical Care Network, the Clinical Hypnosis Institute, and the directors Frank Garfield and Cheryl Beshada. Their content is leading-edge and constantly updated. It is presented very clearly with supportive reference materials, providing everything needed to implement immediately. The Pro Group meetings are opportunities for ongoing learning, networking and idea exchange with a group of exceptional professionals. Frank and Cheryl generously and freely give their time and ideas; they are the most supportive and talented mentors imaginable. In the past, I rarely associated with professional groups because I'm a competence fanatic and don't like to waste my scarce time. I've been participating in this group for several years now and attend almost every activity, always finding each experience awesomely worthwhile. I have also come to this group as a client, and received the help I needed to achieve profound changes that I was unable to accomplish anywhere else. - South Lyon, MI
My membership with the Pro Group has been the best investment I could have made to advance my skills in hypnotherapy and increase my practice. - Eaton Rapids, MI
My association with the Pro Group is the absolute best move I made as a professional hypnotherapist. I have enhanced my knowledge and my professionalism tremendously. The education offered here is superior. - Prescott, AZ
The Clinical Care Network Professional Group is a great organization. Frank Garfield and Cheryl Beshada head it up and they are really dedicated professionals who are passionate not only about hypnotherapy but hypnotherapists as well. They have a great deal of integrity as individuals and they bring that level of integrity to everything they do. They are very committed to helpling each hynotherapist within the group succeed and they don't just say it they back it up by offering tools that make it happen. They have built a web site that includes all of the members; they offer monthly 1 or 2 day continuing education workshops; they facilitate the Pro Group; they are very visible at local events to promote the Pro Group along with hypnotherapy as a profession and they are always available to answer questions and/or help with clients when some input is needed.
The Pro Group meets once a month and each month has a different focus and we receive something to take away with us whether it be a script or technique or tape or any combination thereof. Each month I receive something that I can put to use immediatley. It's complete, it's well thought out and I don't have to spend one second trying to figure out how to make it fit into what I do. It's all there for me to plug right in.
I think what I enjoy the most about the group is the level of integrity and commitment that exists within it. Everyone within the group is there to be better and to learn more. We come to share, we come to learn and each month that I am able to attend I come away with more than I came with. I would strongly suggest you check it out if you're looking for something like this because I can just about guarantee you won't be disappointed. - Dearborn, MI
My involvment with CCN has brought my level of professionalsim to a whole new level. Frank and Cheryl along with all the wonderful talented hypnotherapists associated with the CCN Pro Group continue to enlighten and enhance my awareness of whats new and different in my profession. The continuing education programs are the best I have experienced. - Howell, MI
I consistently find new and better ideas and techniques to use to improve my clients successful experiences with hypnosis by attending CCN Pro Group meetings and the Advanced Hypnotherapy Seminars offered by Clinical Care Network.
- Trenton, MI
I am so delighted that you are continuing to offer this incredible service to practicing hypnotherapists. The clinical support and legal updates make it much easier to feel confident. Several months ago when I called the Pro Group for guidance in working with a very unusual problem, I really didn't expect the very specific guidance I received. The approach suggested was right on target and the intervention worked perfectly. Thanks for being there.
- Laingsburg, MI

With their combined styles and years of expertise, Frank and Cheryl are a "Gold Mine" of information on hypnotherapy. They pay attention to "what works best" for their clients, students and other therapists and are always eager to pass on their wealth of information. If you want to be the best Hypnotherapist you can be - belonging to the Pro Group is a must! - Brighton, MI
When I was a practicing hypnotherapist in Michigan, I found the Pro Group membership and meetings to be an invaluable resource. Now that I have relocated to Southern Oregon I find that the benefits, support and inspiration of the Pro Group to be just as reliable and forthcoming as when I was able to attend the meetings in person. I do miss interacting with and learning from my peers, but thank you Frank and Cheryl for all you do to insure that I don't have to miss anything else the Pro Group offers. Even long distance the Pro Group is unbeatable! - Grants Pass, OR
The following is an open letter to all Certified Hypnotherapists.
Dear Fellow Hypnotherapist,
In response to a growing number of requests for workshops, specialized scripts, individual case review and assistance, we have seen an industry need for the formation of a professional group to better serve the needs of new as well as seasoned professional hypnotherapists.
It doesn't matter how long one has been in practice, or how good we think we are; as we practice in this business we are always learning. Learning and growing is an ongoing process of education. For the industry to grow it is essential that we share new information with each other. If a therapist comes up with a new process that works really well, that process needs to be shared with other therapists for the good of the industry and “For The Excellence Of Service To Our Clients.” In fact that phrase has long been the motto of our personal businesses.
Most of our ProGroup meetings are mini workshops with state-of-the-art processes. Let's all share, help each other and help our individual businesses grow at the same time.
If you feel the same way, want to share your information, and have a professional group of other hypnotherapists you can learn from, grow with, and answer questions, we invite you to join us.
We have designed an organization called the Clinical Hypnosis Professional Group or The Pro Group for short. The group accommodates all levels of expertise from the newly graduated CHt to the seasoned pro practicing full time or part time.
Our first meeting was held August 11th, 2001 and membership continues to grow. The group meets on the first Saturday of each month from 9:30 - noon.
Give us a call or send an e-mail and let us know what you think of the idea. The response so far has been overwhelmingly positive.
Very Sincerely,
Cheryl Beshada & Frank Garfield

The Medical Series Course Descriptions
Clinical Hypnosis Institute
State Licensed School and Curriculum
These courses are designed as post graduate level certification for the Certified professional hypnotherapist who wants to sharpen and expand their skill in specialty areas. The courses may be taken one at a time and don't have to be taken in a particular order. Certificates are issued for each course.
There are fifteen courses in the Medical Hypnosis Certification (C.M.Ht.) Program. We have designed these courses so that a certified hypnotherapist with 120 hours of training from a state licensed hypnosis school may enter this program of certification. These courses begin every other year and the program may be entered at any time, courses may be taken consecutively or one at a time. Certification occurs when all 15 courses have been completed.
Introduction to Anatomy & Physiology is designed to introduce the hypnotherapist to body systems and some of the common problems with each system. Hypnotic suggestions for hypnosis strategies are given throughout this course to address various conditions as we explore the functions of the body.
Trauma Management demonstrates how shock is an altered state of consciousness that can be used hypnotically to induce change in an injured persons condition, e.g., bleeding, swelling, bruising, pain, etc.
Case Histories will be given for a variety of hypnotic interventions given in trauma situations. A video shows the application of these processes for first responders to the emergency situation.
Pregnancy & Childbirth the Garfield Method is one of the few programs that encompass pre-pregnancy issues, the pregnancy, the delivery, and post natal areas of childbirth. The focus of this program is on individual attention to the mother and her needs as they arise throughout the process of having a child. Hypnosis has proven effective in maintaining a comfortable pregnancy, an easy delivery, and quick recovery following the birth. Numerous case histories and testimonials are given.
Smoking Cessation teaches the hypnotherapist how to conduct a successful stop smoking program. Our client's at Clinical Care Network have reported over 95% long term success rate with this program. It is designed as a two session program with step by step processes and scripts that give detailed instruction from the client interview to the last session. This program is used at the Healing Arts Center at the St. John Hospital and Medical Center.
Subconscious Mind Healing (SMH) is a variation of the wonderful Analytical Hypnosis process developed by Dr. Edgar Barnett. In this technique there is no dialogue between therapist & client. Rather, the therapist guides the client through a subconscious process to find the original cause and the solution of the presenting problem. Often times the therapist and even the client are unaware of the cause of the problem, yet resolution is achieved. We have often switched to this process during analytical hypnotherapy when the client does not respond through ideomotor processes or verbal communication. It is also used as the first regression as there is minimal or no abreaction experienced by the client.
Weight/Shape Management This program encourages a healthy life style that promotes healthy eating, exercise and stress management. It is designed as a 5 to 6 session format with sessions scheduled one to two weeks apart and then once a month until the desired goal is achieved. Because weight is a multifaceted issue, we include numerous processes that address everything from emotional eating, to resistance to exercise. The manual is over 100 pages with step by step processes and scripts that give detailed instruction from the client interview to the last session. This program is used at the Healing Arts Center at the St. John Hospital and Medical Center.
Creating Medical Programs is designed to teach individual hypnotherapists how to create hypnotic strategies for a wide variety of medical conditions. Hypnosis Scripts and Programs are developed using Ericksonian language patterns and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). Learn the art and specialized usage of Waking Hypnosis techniques during client intake to maximize your success. This is an extension of the previous course on Physiology & Anatomy.
Instant and Rapid Inductions is a course no one should be without. You will finish this course as an adept in speed inductions, learning the subtle nuances that make these gems work every time with any client. Standing up, sitting down, or in a hospital bed these inductions save time when you need it. Speed Inductions are very useful when there is a maximum of work to be done and a short amount of time to do it in. A rapid or instantaneous induction is not only quick but often quite a deep trance state. They are useful for deepening a trance state, fractionation, and conditioning a client for future sessions.
Hypnotic Intervention for Pain Management Various techniques are employed for acute pain as well as for chronic pain. Learn numerous techniques to alleviate various types of pain, including phantom pain due to amputation. Many of our private clients have reported that they came in with headaches or body aches & pains that were gone after their session for something unrelated. Deep relaxation alone will reduce or eliminate many aches & pains without even addressing them directly. Specific hypnosis direction to a particular area of concern can reduce or eliminate discomfort literally within seconds. Frank will show you techniques that have eliminated migraine headaches in 30 seconds over the telephone. Learn to empower your client by teaching them self hypnosis to employ a wide variety of hypnotic processes for pain management.
Pre & Post Surgery and Organ Transplants is a course that was just written in the year 2002 following requests from several clients we worked with during the previous year. Pre surgery anxiety can present many problems for the patient as well as the surgeon. Most of these problems can be easily overcome with hypnosis. Post Surgery Recovery can be much shorter in duration and much more comfortable through the use of hypnosis. This course also includes processes to help client's adapt to appliances for hip and knee replacement surgery as well as prosthesis and phantom pain. Organ Transplants present some very unique problems. Both pre and post surgery processes are useful for organ transplants. Sometimes organs are rejected when by all rights they shouldn't be because there is no logical medical reason for a rejection. Many organ recipients report changes in personality traits. Taking on some characteristics of the donor is not uncommon. We've scientifically researched why some of these things happen and how hypnosis can help change these phenomenon.
Basic Core Issue Clearing is a regression process that employs ideomotor and/or verbal communication with the client. The “Sub-Conscious Computer” records and files everything that we've ever experienced along with our feelings, thoughts, decisions, even beliefs that were formed in the core of our being. Often times when there is an issue to resolve, the experience or belief had gone into the Sub-Conscious at a much earlier time, perhaps at a very young age. It became stuck or frozen in that time space coordinate without the benefit of logic or reason.
Just as a computer cannot access of its information at the same time and the screen can only show a limited view of what's there, the Conscious Mind similarly doesn't have access to all of the information stored at the Sub-Conscious level. However, when properly guided to do so, the subconscious can do a “File Search” and bring up a particular file that we choose to work on.
Through the Core Issue Clearing process, the client is guided to create a “Safe File Folder” to hold their “core issues” for further work. The therapists formulates a series of questions that pertain to the client's presenting issue and guides the Subconscious to search through the files and gather information and then place it in the Safe File Folder so that it can be resolved at a later time. The questions are designed to get things “percolated”, safely stored, and then categorized into similar groups for future resolution.
The Sub-Conscious is very efficient at formulating and creating a “Category Report” After asking a series of questions the therapist guides the Sub-Conscious to access the Safe File Folder and separate and categorize the issues into groups of similar issues so that they can be released and cleared in groups. We then determine how many groups there are and number them for future reference. Some groups may only have one issue that pertains to the Initial Sensitizing Experience and others will have numerous issues For each group that we address, we ask if there is more than one issue in that particular group. If there is more than one issue, we ask the Sub-Conscious Mind to choose and issue that can be symbolic and represent all of the issues in that group.
The groups are released and cleared one by one until all groups are resolved.
Higher Self - Inner Wisdom - Super-Conscious - This process can be adapted in different ways to include “Higher Self Processes” also known as “Inner Wisdom” or “Super Conscious”. Because the Sub-Conscious takes in both negative and positive and is often compared to a child ego state, it has been my experience and personal belief that assistance from a much wiser and higher source is very effective - Cheryl Beshada
This course is an adaptation of the Basic Core Issue Clearing process originally developed by Joan Ratliff, B.A.,CHt and is modified and presented by Cheryl Beshada, CMHt.
Origins of Illness (Prerequisite - Basic Core Issue Clearing) A firm understanding
and skill in the Basic Core Issue Clearing process is a prerequisite to this class. A deep understanding of medical protocol is included in this course as well as an understanding as to what can be healed totally or partially, as well as to what symptoms can be alleviated. The therapist learns how to research and formulate questions that pertain to specific medical conditions. These questions are strategically designed to elicit feelings, emotions, and other causes that have contributed to the client's presenting illness. These issues are then released.
Hypnodontics (All aspects of hypnosis in dentistry) covers just about anything and everything you could possibly use in dental hypnosis including: hypnoanesthesia, bruxism, TMJ, dental anxiety, adjusting to braces, bridges, and dentures , rapid healing after an extraction, minimize or eliminate bleeding during cleaning or following an extraction, and much, much more.
Hypnotic Intervention for Cancer Patients could be a career specialty in and of itself. You will be shown hypnosis techniques that effectively reduce or eliminate pain and reduce or eliminate side effects of Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy (hair loss, nausea, weakness, etc). These programs in conjunction with medical care have also been effective in reducing the size of tumors, the growth rate of tumors and cancer cell production, and in some cases elimination of the cancer completely.

Relationships
One of the best courses a hypnotherapist can take. Understanding the dynamics of inter-relationships (personal, family, business, romantic, etc.) and the role of personal priorities will clearly tell a client why a particular relationship isn't working and what needs to happen to resolve that problem. Clients begin to recognize disruptive patterns that can then be reframed through the hypnotherapeutic process.
Prerequisite: Basic Core Issue Clearing

Taking Care of Business w/ Risk Management
A person can be the best therapist there is and yet fail because they don't don't know how to conduct business, they don't understand certain business principles such as accounting, proper advertising, not knowing how to make or use a business plan, and such things as selective Target Marketing. This one day course is taught in conjunction with our excellent Clinical Hypnosis Institute CHt Certification course and is open to all certified hypnotherapists interested in enhancing their business skills.

Mainstream medicine embraces the mind to heal the body

It’s all in your head. Just breathe. Laughter is the best medicine.
Whether through hypnotherapy, deep breathing exercises or laughter therapy, using the mind to help heal the body or cope with pain has long been a common practice in traditional Eastern medicine. But in recent years, it’s become popular in the United States as patients turn to holistic or alternative methods of healing to augment conventional medical care.
One local medical facility that uses hypnotherapy to help with healing and pain is the Van Elslander Cancer Center’s Valade Healing Arts Center in Grosse Pointe Woods.
“With hypnosis or guided imagery or meditation, the mind will go into an altered state, where the brain waves are slowed down,” says Cheryl Beshada, a certified medical hypnotherapist at Valade.
When the patient is relaxed to that level, he or she is in a state of heightened focus and hyper-suggestibility, Beshada says. And when used on cancer patients, these methods can help patients imagine their immune system healing, or their tumors decreasing in size, she explains.
“We also work a lot with people who are having nausea from their chemotherapy. We have them focus on a time when they were feeling well, and their stomach was settled,” she says.
Such methods help patients take control in situations where they might otherwise feel powerless, says Beshada. “It helps empower them and play a more proactive role in their healing process.”
Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit is also employing relaxation therapy for patients who are undergoing procedures that may cause them to be anxious or stressed. The patients are taken to the hospital’s Relaxation Station, one of the first of its kind in a pediatric hospital setting, where they view a calming 120-minute film over closedcircuit television.
The film, developed by the hospital in partnership with Sue Marx Films and Wildlife HD, includes nature scenes accompanied by original, calming music, as well as narration by both children and adults suggesting simple breathing techniques and relaxation exercises. It’s used with cancer patients and in the hospital’s burn unit and sickle-cell clinic.
“Our preliminary research using the Relaxation Station shows that both patients and their families felt calmer and less worried after watching the program,” says Anju Sawni, M.D., adolescent medicine specialist at Children’s Hospital. “Using the film to teach guided imagery and breathing techniques can be an important part of a sick child’s treatment plan.”
THE WHOLE PATIENT
Healing the whole patient – body, mind and spirit – is the mantra at Cancer Treatment Centers of America, a hospital network with centers in suburban Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle and Tulsa, Okla. The centers’ philosophy brings in many patients from other cities, too. In fact, the network’s Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Zion, Ill., receives more inquiries from the Detroit area than anywhere else outside the Chicago region.
At facilities such as Valade Healing Arts Center or Cancer Treatment Centers, patients are treated by oncologists, but also have access to other services such as guided imagery, laughter therapy, spiritual guidance, nutritionist consultations, reiki (a form of spiritual healing through the laying on of hands), or qigong (an ancient Chinese form of energy healing through breathing techniques).
“Here, we believe very strongly in treating the whole person, not just the tumor,” says Katherine Puckett, a licensed clinical social worker and director of Mind Body Medicine at CTCA’s Midwestern center.
The Cancer Treatment Centers employ mind-body therapists as part of a program designed to help strengthen patients’ minds as they journey toward health. The program offers individual, group and family therapy; stress management education; and guided imagery and relaxation training.
Puckett says guided imagery is a good tool for relaxation, stress reduction and pain relief. “A lot of research has been done that shows the physical benefits of guided imagery,” she says.
During a guided-imagery session, the patient is encouraged to imagine “a special place or healing place,” Puckett explains. “We ask them to imagine that they are in the most relaxing place they can think of, whether it is on a beach, or a favorite vacation spot. … We pose questions to help them conjure all the details. Is it warm or cool, are they sitting or lying down, what are they seeing, what are they smelling?”
When patients have mentally transported themselves to this special place, they are giving their mind and body a vacation from the stress of being ill, says Puckett.

SELF-HYPNOSIS MIGHT HELP YOU GET THROUGH CHALLENGING TIMES
By Cynthia Lambert Nehr / Special to The Detroit News Wednesday, February 23, 2005
Perhaps you're eight and a half months pregnant and you're starting to wonder how this "natural" childbirth decision of yours is going to play out. Are you actually going to be able to withstand the pains and pangs of intense labor and delivery without the assistance of medication? Or maybe you're a college student who didn't do too well on your midterm exams. You knew the material, but when it came to test time, you froze up and couldn't recall many of the answers. Or maybe you're a high school basketball player who can sink free throw after free throw at practice and even before a game. But when the eyes of teammates, opponents and fans are on you, you can't seem to sink a shot. You might be a prime candidate to learn self-hypnosis. Cheryl Beshada, a certified medical hypnotherapist, says that self-hypnosis is a wonderful tool to learn in order to tackle some of life's tougher moments, or even those consistently challenging ones that may drag you down. "Hypnosis goes much further than does visualization," says Beshada, who practices out of her Clinical Hypnosis Institute office in Warren and at the Valade Center for Healing Arts at the VanElslander Cancer Center at St. John Hospital in Detroit. "You can open your eyes and study and retain more. Actually, you can recall everything you studied much more readily. "We also teach self-hypnosis for sports. The person can picture in their mind what they want to accomplish and then do that." But as Beshada says, hypnosis goes much deeper than just visualization. It's not just about hitting that cross-court winner on the tennis court. Instead, during self-hypnosis training, the subject learns how to recall a touch sensation, a word or a color to access the post-hypnotic suggestion. "I practice this myself," Beshada says. "For our clients we guide them into a level of hypnosis and then we anchor it into them. Once we anchor in that level of feeling, we give them a posthypnotic suggestion that they can carry out by accessing one of three methods -- kinesthetically (touch), auditorily (word) or visually (imagining a color). Using these modalities, you can recall in seconds what you want."
PICKING A HYPNOTHERAPIST

So, you're interested in using hypnosis in your quest to lose weight, stop smoking or deal with the ever-mounting stress in your life. How do you find someone who truly knows what they are doing, and someone who can handle your exact needs? Certified hypnotherapist Cheryl Beshada says that underlying issues or medical conditions must be taken into consideration before hypnosis can work as effectively as possible. It is important that you remain aware of this as you seek out a qualified hypnotherapist. "There are many situations where we consult with the patient's physician first," says Beshada, who practices hypnotherapy at the Valade Healing Arts Center at the VanElslander Cancer Center at St. John Hospital. "This way, we are sure they have the appropriate diagnosis so that, through hypnosis, we aren't masking anything. We don't want to take the pain away if there is something that needs medical attention. "That's why you need to make sure you are working with a certified hypnotherapist. You may be suffering from appendicitis. In that case, you don't want hypnosis masking your symptoms. Each situation is unique."
